Kenneth Whitney
This resume is to introduce the Sport Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame with a basic sport resume of Kenneth J. Whitney, now living in Head Jeddore, N.S. Ken enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy back in 1951, and did his new entry training at H.M.C.S. Cornwallis, N.S. While stationed there Ken was introduced into the Military Sports programs that everyone had to participate in. Although, Ken had played High School Football, the Naval Football Team “Cornwallis Cougars” were looking for players to play in the Maritime Football League, that included the “Stadacona Sailors”, “Shearwater Flyers”, “Dalhousie Tigers”, “Saint Mary’s Huskies” ,”Greenwood Bombers”, etc. Ken tried out for the team and made first string. That was the start of his fascination with Canadian Football. Ken Played 2 seasons with the Cornwallis Cougars before being transferred out of Cornwallis. Ken’s exposure to Canadian Football is covered in two parts of this presentation. The first in his overall Sports Resume and then in another section entitled Canadian Football.
JUDO -1960 TO PRESENT
Ken’s main sport was Judo from 1960 to present, and the following is a breakdown of his commitment to the Sport. Ken was involved as an administrator, Coach, Official and Competitor at all levels, Regional, Provincial, National, and International in one capacity or another throughout this forty five plus years of exposure and participation. The following is a breakdown of his commitment in Judo:
COMPETITOR
1961/67: Competed at the Regional, Provincial and National level.
1961/64: Ken won various Provincial Championships at the Green, blue, and the brown Belt levels.
1965: Represented N.S. at the 4th National Championships, Toronto, Ontario.
1967: Represented N.S. at the 7th National Championships, Montreal, Quebec. (Olympic Trials)
COACH/INSTRUCTOR
Nova Scotia – 1962/65: Organized and Instructed the Granby Senior And Junior Judo Club at the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic).
Toronto, Ontario – 1966/69: Re-organized and instructed the CFB Toronto Judo Club at both Senior and Junior levels.
Indian Head, Maryland – 1969: Instructed the Indian Head Judo Club at Indian Head, Maryland, USA, both Sr. and Jr. levels. Reorganized and instructed the Granby Judo Club 1971/73 Reorganized and instructed the Shearwater Judo Club 1973/88 ( Renaming the club the Shearwater, Granby Judo Club, but later reverting the club back to the Shearwater Judo Club.
Eastern Shore Judo Club 1985 - present: Organized and Instructed as The Chief Judo Instructor at the Eastern Shore Judo Club in Musquodoboit Harbor, N.S.
2004: Assisting the Sheet Harbor Judo Club to establish and become Members of Judo Nova Scotia. Through the National Coaching Certification Program, Ken obtained the following qualification: Certified Judo Coach Level’s I, II, III Certified Judo Course Conductor of Level’s I, II, & III. 1973/86 Provincial Judo Coach. 1974 – successfully coached the Eastern Canadian Armed Forces Judo Team against the Western Canadian A.F. Judo Team.
CANADA WINTER GAMES JUDO TEAMS
1974: Team Coach – One Bronze Medal – Lethbridge, Alberta.
1979: Team Coach - One Silver Medal - Brandon, Manitoba.
1983: Coach/Manager – One Gold, One Silver, Three Bronze Medals
1987: Judo Official at the CWG’s in Sydney, N.S.
OFFICIAL
1972/75: Ken Officiated at the Canadian National Exhibition National and International Judo Championships held in Toronto, Ontario.
1975: Ken received his National “A” officials level, and since then has Officiated at numerous National Judo Championships held across Canada. Ken has also had his Officiating level validated numerous times so as to retain his status as a National “A” referee.
1979/80: Part of the officiating team in Quebec City for the first 2 International Judo Canada Cup Championships. Ken was Provincial Chief Judo Referee from 1976 until 1987. While in that role, Ken encouraged and made it possible for many provincial candidates to be upgraded through the regional, provincial, and national levels of Officiating.
ADMINISTRATOR
Ken has continually worked as a builder in our sport of Judo in many administrative duties. Regionally, Provincially, Inter-Provincially, and Nationally across Canada. While President of JNS, in 1974 he was instrumental in bringing the Eastern Canadian Judo Championships to Nova Scotia, and he also was instrumental in starting the Maritime Judo Championships in 1975, which is now an annual event in our Maritime Provinces. Administrative positions that Ken has held throughout his commitment to Judo has been the following: 1972/73 – Secretary, Treasurer Judo Nova Scotia 1976/88 – President of Judo Nova Scotia 1976/89 – Judo Canada National Councilor for Nova Scotia. 1976/89 – Chairman of Judo Nova Scotia’s Provincial Grading Board. 1991/2004 – Resumed Position of Chairman of the JNS Grading Board. 1975/89 – Senior Provincial Judo Official. 1984/88 – Vice-President of Judo Canada. 1986/90 – Sec/Tres of Judo Nova Scotia 2002/04 – Secretary, Judo Nova Scotia. 1999/2005 – Chairman of the Atlantic Provinces Grading Board. 2004/05 – Judo Nova Scotia Executive at Large (Hall of Fame & History Committee).
AWARDS
Ken has received numerous awards, and are as follows: 1983 – Runner up for Sport Nova Scotia Sport Executive of the year. 1984 – Named Sport Nova Scotia Sport Executive of the year. 1976 – Honor of being part of the Canadian Olympic Judo Officiating team a At the Olympics in Montreal, Canada. 1987 – As a member of the Shearwater Flyers Football Team 1957 ken was Inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. 1989 – The Shearwater Flyers Football team 1957 was inducted into the Military Sports Hall of Fame. 1996 – One of the original inductees into Judo Canada’s Judo Hall of Fame. As a builder. 1998 – Inducted into the Military Sport Hall of Fame as a Builder of Judo in Military, N.S. and Canada. 2004 – inducted into the Judo Nova Scotia Hall of Fame for forty five plus Years of building and administrating Judo in Nova Scotia. Ken has continued to be involved in Judo during the past 40 years at all levels of the sport, and will still be seen at various tournaments either officiating or helping in some way, baring that as a cheering spectator. -

ATHLETIC TRAINER
Ken’s introduction to Athletic Training actually came about while working with other sports while as a coach and manager. Ken attended the Cosponsored Workshop for Coaches and Teachers in the Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Craimers Products, Inc., and University of New Hampshire 7 to 11 of August 1978. and further to that Ken attended the Acadia University’s course on the Prevention. Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries, shortly after. Teams and Groups that Ken worked with at that time were: 1978/80 – Shearwater Flyers Hockey Team 1977/80 – Shearwater Soccer Team 1974/86 – Shearwater Judo Team and the Judo Nova Scotia Provincial Team. During this time Frame, Ken was assigned the responsibility of being the Military Regional Trainer for various regional Teams in the Regional and National Championships for Soccer (1977/80), Broomball,(1982), Softball (1986) and Basketball (1986).
BOXING
Ken was a competitor, coach and Trainer for the Cornwallis, Stadacona and Shearwater Military Teams, and while in Hong Kong Ken represented H.M.C.S. Iroquois in boxing. CANADIAN FOOTBALL
This is just a short breakdown of Ken’s Canadian Football exposure: 1951/52 – Member of the H.M.C.S. Cornwallis team, the Cornwallis Cougars. 1953/54 – Member of the H.M.C.S. Stadacona team the Stadacona Sailors. 1956/57 – Member of the Balmy Beach Intermediate (Toronto Argo’s Farm Team. 1957/58 – Member of the Shearwater Flyers – DOMINION CHAMPIONS – 1957 1959/62 – Member of the Stadacona Sailors 1965/66 – Member of the Dartmouth Vikings, Dartmouth, N.S. In 1987 as a member of the Shearwater Flyers of 1957, Ken was inducted as a team member into the Sport Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. In 1989 as a member of the Shearwater Flyers of 1957 , Ken was inducted as a team member into the Military Sports Hall of Fame.
HOCKEY
Ken has had a variety of exposures in Hockey as an Official, Coach, Athletic Trainer: 1975/78 – Coached Midget, Juvenile, and the Base Representative Team, the Shearwater Flyers. 1962/65 – Officiated at the minor & intermediate level of Hockey 1972/77 – officiated in the Dartmouth Industrial League, Minor Hockey and Intermediate levels and at the metro level. Ken has included some of the Team pictures from the various era’s of his participation in hockey.
SHOOTING SPORTS
1969 – Small Bore sporting rifle team member at Downsview, Toronto, Ont., 1971/73 – President of the Granby Rifle Team that was at the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic) 1971/72 – Maritime Command Team member shooting at the Canaught Ranges in Ottawa. (Two years), Rifle, Pistol, submachine gun, teams. 1971 & 72 – Represented Nova Scotia at the National Pistol Championships in Sudbury, Ontario. 1974 - Ken entered the Shooting Federation of Canada’s .22 pistol Postal shoot and placed first overall. Ken also has to his credit 7 gold shields and 7 silver shields in the Dominion Marksman’s awards in .22 Rifle shooting, while in the C.I.L, Dominion Marksman Award program in.22 pistol shooting Ken has been awarded 12 Master Shields, Ken is a member of the Atlantic Marksmen’s Association, but has trouble getting to the range as often as he would like.
SOCCER
In soccer, ken has also had a length exposure over time with the sport: 1955/56 – Player and equipment manager for the Cornwallis Soccer Team, Cornwallis, N.S. 1964/65 – Team member of the combined H.M.C.S.’s Iroquois & Huron Soccer Team that played against various Asiatic National Teams on their tour of duty around the world. (Hong Kong, Ceylon, India, Karachi, Sasebo, Japan) 1977/79 – Team member and Athletic Trainer for the Shearwater Flyers that won three consecutive regional Championships over that time period.
RAMBLINGS
Ken has been exposed to other sports, but not as strongly as the ones listed above but his greatest thrust, assistance and building has been in the sport of Judo. Ken has also had time to be the Mayor of Shearwater for a period, plus other endeavors as a executive member of the Arena Managers of Nova Scotia before it changed to the Recreation and Facility Managers of Nova Scotia.
